RCD tripping issue (again) - Earth Leakage?

How time flies! Back in August 2019 I was having issues with the garden lights causing an RCD to trip as discussed in the following post:

I did eventually resolve this but it required an electrician to work through the fittings to try to identify the issue. He didn't seem to have the correct equipment i.e. I didn't see him do any earth leakage testing, but he spent a lot of time disconnecting each light fitting and reconnecting it. He pointed out that some of the flush fitting wall lights, which are clipped into an enclosure that is buried into the wall, was full of gung i.e. dirt, dead insects etc. all of which probably got in through the cable entry point in the back of the enclosure. I therefore cleaned them all out. I can't remember if this fixed the issue at the time, but over the years I've continued to have problems with these garden lights causing the RCD to trip and I've done various things to try to resolve them, including:

1. Replacing all the underground galvanised steel junction boxes that were installed by the original electrician (in 2017) to connect SWA cables to light fittings. These were filled with gell. The connections for light fittings were moved above ground and junctions boxes used and any remaining underground SWA connections were done using resin filled jointing kits.
2. Replacing parts of the festoon lights (3 lengths connected together).
3. Keeping the inside of the wall lights connection box clean.
4. Ensuring the festoon string bulbs are replaced when they fail, which seems to be far too often!

All of this seems to have ensured the RCD hasn't tripped, until now!!

A couple of weeks ago I added a couple of new garden lights, both wired into the same above ground junction box at the end of an existing SWA cable run. As soon as I turned the garden lights on, the RCD tripped. I disconnected both new lights, turned the garden lights on and to my surprise it still tripped! I've now been unable to resolve this despite playing around with the lights and disconnecting (live and neutral) various connections in the outside garden junction box. On the odd occasion where the lights stayed on for any length of time, they would eventually trip or turning on another appliance or switch protected by the same RCD would cause them to trip. When the mcb for the garden lights is off, there are no issues.

This therefore looks like an earth leakage problem, but I have no idea why it should have started when the two new light fittings were attached or why it has continued after they have been removed!

I have checked every junction box and every wall light and there is no sign of damp in any of them. There are two underground resin junction kits, but I find it hard to believe they are suddenly causing an issue.

Here's a diagram I produced showing the layout of the various garden light fittings and garden water feature pump. 1.5mm twin and earth SWA is used for most cable runs, except the wall lights as the external waterproof cable was run directly behind the wall and filled with rubble, before soil was added. All connections to lights and the pump are done above ground in a junction box, using SWA glands and earthing nuts.


I suspect I will need to engage an electrician, but would appreciate your thoughts on what else I might do to try to identify the problem.

Regarding the plan, there are two double pole switches; one for all the lights and the other for only the pump.

One thought I had was to upgrade the 12 year old plastic consumer unit to use RCCB's instead of the existing MCB's and RCD's. I understand that any electrician performing this upgrade will test the existing electrics and I would hope, identify the earth leakage issue that currently exists. Depending on how bad this is, it may be that the new RCCB's will fix the issue, but this may be wishful thinking. However, having RCCB's will definitely avoid the current issue of the garden circuit tripping other MCB's. I appreciate this isn't a cheap "fix" and even after the upgrade, work may still be required to identify and resolve the garden tripping issue.

The part of the circuit I worked on was the one on the left, which shows 3 junction boxes and 3 20w lights. I simply connected the final two new 20w lights to the last junction box. No other work done anywhere else on the circuit. After it tripped, I removed those final two lights by disconnecting them (earth, neutral and live) in the junction box.

As part of my testing, I've disconnected various circuits from the garden junction box (neutral and live wires) but at some point it still trips the RCD when they are turned on.
 
... I've just updated the diagram to include a circuit identifier, alongside the approximate length of the cable run e.g. C1, C2 etc.

C1 is the circuit I added the 2 new light fittings to.

Definitely not. I've checked this. On some of the SWA the earth is Grey and on other the earth is the usual yellow/green, so I'm 100% sure I didn't connect the wrong wires. Besides, the 2 new light fittings I originally added, which seemed to start this issue, have been removed. Even after removing some of the other circuits e.g. unplugging the festoon lights (C6) and/or disconnecting the wall lights (C5), the remaining lights will work but will eventually cause a trip, either after a length of time, or when a light etc. connected to the same RCD is turned on. I say "after a length of time", but it is possible someone switched something on!
 
For clarity, circuit C3 doesn't currently have any light fittings connected and neither does the first junction box on C1. The end of C5 also has a junction box, but nothing is currently connected.

If this tripping issue is ever fully resolved, these 4 junction boxes will be used to add additional LED fittings.

That would cause an instant trip at switch on

Bit hard to follow your postings and whether that is the case. Probably could be anything by the sounds of it.
 
One for the electricians.
Mate had tripping box on final day of rewire when outside lights were fitted.
Disconnected lights and all good. Reconnected and all good for a bit then tripped.
Wired outside lights to neighbours outside socket and all good.
Wired back in fusebox and tripped it.
Eventually sparks took fusebox off wall and tested and no fault found.
Gave a smack and a small bit of wire fell out.
That was doing it!
Wasted hours trying to understand what the fault was.

There doesn't appear to be any pattern as to what causes the RCD to trip, except that the garden lights are on. Sometimes they trip as soon as they are turned on, sometimes they can be on for a while and then trip. Sometimes they are turned on and seem to be okay, then the garage light is turned on (on the same group of MCB's as the RCD that protects the garden MCB) and this causes the RCD to trip. I've tried this with various garden circuits connected but it's always the same.

When the garden lights are off, no tripping occurs.
 
Op.

Have you tried wiring lights to a socket in the house so it's off another circuit?
