Had a light renovation in recent years by a tradesman.
As I understand some plastering and decorating.
There is no damp smell

This is not my house.
Various tradesmen have been out with varying diagnoses so the owner is a bit lost on which way to go.

Gypsum over lime
Damp
No mist coat

Some pics...
Hallway is cosmetically the worst area.
Paint has fallen off. Some of the plaster is loose I believe this continues into the understairs cupboard.
Wall is to attached property

Back room
This is an external wall to rear. Most of the rest of the room is OK
Dark areas are just shadows when I took the pics

Front room
First pic front of chimney breast (Living flame fire). There are a few other areas to the attached property with similar paint failure
Second pic side of chimney breast
Third pic to front exterior wall.

Try a breathable paint over.
Contract matt or paint suitable for lime plaster.
Gypsum plaster was probably not the best idea although people get away with it.
Are the problem walls outside walls? A little condensation maybe..
House has had a damp treatment at the bottom metre? Look's like it with how it's plastered.
Cork plaster is good for that type of property you could look at on a problem wall to test maybe..

Check drains outside don't have cracks. All the water is going down drain and not through a edge crack and under property?

Storm dry can be used on outside bricks.

You need good advice.

What is the history of the house and the adjoining property?, an old couple might have lived there for years with no or low heating allowing the damp to build up in the walls. You can try the sticking plaster approach and tank the walls with a sealing paint, or chop off a section and let it dry out, then review

Thanks for the reply Wayners
Terraced. Attached on both sides.

The worst of it is in the hall which is a party wall.
You may be right about damp treatment with the clear distinction at around 1M.
The owner is trying to locate the invoice which may list the works to some degree.

The walls that are exterior, whilst there are problems do not look too major. Peeled paint in a few spots.
Could just be poorly prepped prior to painting?
Most of the finish in the house is very good but a few areas lacking attention to detail. Poorly filled/finished prior to painting.
Do you think that the minor peeling areas could be sorted with a scrape, Gardz/BIN, fill, Gardz/BIN and paint?

The waste drains are at the rear and well away from the problem areas. Rear garden slopes away from the house.
At the front, the rainwater goes to a shared downpipe that is not in the grounds of the property.
The is a small bay window with flat roof to the front with a downpipe. Not sure where the discharges to.
