Slaughtering animals for food is cruel and painful for the anilmals. All slaughtered animals have their throat slit. They have to be hung upside down and bled out. I'd say those that are stunned into unconciousness - this is the least troubling part of the process.

Nonsense. Their treatment leading up to it is torture. They are unconsious and unaware (mostly) when their throats are slit.

Barbaric? Dunno if I'd call it that. We haven't always used humane methods in the UK. We need to kill animals for food. Blasting their brains out or hacking at them with a machette or clubbing them with a sledgehammer is unnecessary in this day and age - that I do agree. Not sure how I would tackle it if I was personally confronted with the fact that I needed meat and I didnt have a slaughterhouse handy....?

A really sharp cut to the jugular/cartoid I would consider better than some of our (UK) earlier methods.

Not really. We kill animals for food. As barbaric as that sounds to some people - it is a fact of life. Some countries eat dogs or horses. I have no issues with that. Some hardy women folk think nothing about picking one of the family chickens, and behading it live with a cleaver, to feed the family. This behaviour is normal, typical and not unique amongst rural folk.

During the horse meat shenanigans, the thing that pizzed me off was that I was paying beef price for it (triple that of 'oss).

Flavour-wise, I never noticed any difference.

It wouldn't be "stunning" if it killed the animal.
The correct term would be "killing".
