Even someone as stup1d as you can see that the location of the rendezvous is greater than the width of the IoW from north to south which is... 13 miles. It's also approximately halfway between the north and south main shipping lanes (see all the little arrows), making it just over 20nm.

here you go : As the UK territorial waters extended furthest out from our shore due to the IOW bulge that means under maritime law we are responsible for the following boundary, this is called the contiguous zone, which extends in the channel between 12 and 24 miles... as the rescue was at 22.7 miles from the IOW its in our zone. The issue you have is that this zone is directly related to the territorial bulge see map or pop over to the maritime agency for the definitive map of which rescue service to call by lat/long in the channel.

Perhaps you should understand the law rather than what you make up in your head the UK's boundaries.
