Hello all,

We moved in about a year ago into an 8 year old house with an "Ideal Classic" boiler, with a honeywell programmable controller.

We noticed last night that the heating did not come on, even though the programmer and thermostat were commanding for heat. Had a look and noticed that the boiler was just not firing up. But this morning, we still had hot water!

So, this evening, after reading up a bit on this site, I had a look, and noticed that the pressure was very low, about 0.4, so I re-pressurised it, and it stabilised at 2.2 or so. However, the boiler still does not fire up. The pilot light is on.

Help, anyone!!!

yes it does. I just turned everything, including the programmer 3amp switch off, and the pilot is still on

 oh no!!! Ok, I am sitting down now......what sort of prices am I looking at for one of those?

Thanks for your help so far, by the way

I am not sure of the price of the part but it shouldnt take more than an hour to change it

:)

should not be too bad

Some classics are permanent pilot.

As for the heating id suspect the motor valve.

ok, thanks, I will call someone in tomorrow.

Can I be fairly certain that IS the fault? or is it possible to be something else that is mega expensive?

The boiler shows absolutely no signs of life (no sounds, nothing) when the programmer is switched on......the pilot light just burns away quietly!

rob884, thanks. Any ideas on how i can narrow down the particular fault it is? The boiler is an Ideal classic RS250

As Rob says some of the first classics were permanent pilot, but as yours is only 8 years old then this will not be a permanent pilot.

As Rob also says you need to check for power to the boiler during heat demand, if none then it could be a faulty motorised valve.

If there is power to the boiler then check if fan is spinning, or if there is power to the fan.

do you still have HW? What you did have may have been from when the boiler was working.

If the boiler has stopped providing both HW and CH then there is a good chance theres a boiler fault. If its still doing HW then boiler is ok and is external control fault.

RS250 is Balanced flue classic and had pilots up untill about 4/5 years ago..Is your pressure gauge in a housing above the boiler. Do you hear the pump running at all.

Thank you all so much.

Please bear with me if i explain things in laymans terms.....I am a layman!

No, there is no sound of a pump running at all.

Above the boiler (but within the boiler housing) is some red "balloon like" container, set at an angle. :?:

Boiler is still definetly doing hot water....I just checked again, and the water is steaming hot (The backup immersion heater has never been switched on)
