Hi,

Walked past the boiler flue on the way in from work last night and noticed a high pitch whirring come from it - sounded like a fan?? Woke up this morning to no heating or hot water.

I've had a look at the boiler - Ideal Classic - there is no pilot light and it refuses to fire up.

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks in advance.

Is it too obvious to say the fan is faulty.

OK then, perhaps I should have been more descriptive

Will it be expensive? Is it easy to fix? Would a broken fan stop the pilot light from coming on?

Cheers

Assuming your boiler has automatic ignition i.e there isn't a permanant pilot
then yes it will stop it coming on.

Fan retail prices are around the £150ish. Plus labour. Although getting your corgi man to grease/oil it may get it working for some time.

Good boiler though.

Thanks so much :D

I'm pretty sure there isn't a permanent pilot on the boiler.

Nice to hear your comment about the boiler too.

These forums never cease to amaze me :D

rob884 - you were absolutely correct. The plumber used a bit of WD40? on the fan and the boiler fired up as soon as it was switched on - after having a good look at the fan, he advised to replace it sooner rather than later as he would not be confident of it lasting the winter!

Thanks again!

Yep, the fan is on order and will be fitted on Wednesday - so I hope the old one lasts 4-5 days!
