Hi Guys, thanks in advance for all replies..... can any one recommend a decent mains powered smoke/fire alarm....its for my main hallway. Im trying to balance budget with suitability. I do want a decent one and will pay up to £25+ Any recomendations???.....also, on another fire safety point... do fire caps need to be fitted above down lighters in my hallway ceiling ( room above is my bedroom ) i have 4 dowlighters with i think 60mm holes. Cheers :D

get the aico smoke alarms mate, been using them for years with no problems and you can interlink meaning they both sound if one is activated, which is a good idea if there are too many doors between you and the activated detector(it will wake you at night).

fire hoods are always a good idea imo for the downlights.alternatively use cfl lamps in the fitting or led lamps that do not generate so much heat.

You really don't understand the point of fire hoods do you?

They are to prevent a fire penetrating a fire rated ceiling. How hot the lamp gets is completely, entirely, absouloutly irrelevant.

There is no point fitting fire caps in a hallway. That whopping great hole in the ceiling where your stairs go up to the next floor is a much easier route than a 60mm hole filled with metal and glass for a fire to get upstairs.

As for smoke alarms, I personally prefer the easi-fit range from Ei electronics.

well there you go.

i thought one application was to prevent setting fire to adjacent materials.i also thought this was the angle you were asking from.you learn something everyday :D

Thanks Again Daytona, You did have the angle right on my question about fire hoods. So cheers for that mate. The ceiling where im fitting down lights is currently stripped back the the lathes, I can see the flooring underlay from the room above ( bedroom ) through a few badly fitted floor boards. Just didnt want the heat from the lamps casuing a fire risk. Theres plenty of surrounding clearance for the lights, so im sure it will be cool....just wanted to check with others first. Thanks again mate. (im now on web looking into aico smoke alarms )
