About to remove wallpaper from interior wals of Victorian hse; have been told consists of coal plaster.

Plse can anyone tell me what this is and how to recognise.

What prep do I need to do prior to painting.

Grateful for any advice

I've never heard of coal plaster either,although that doesn't mean anything. Does the plaster look dark as if it could have had say, coal dust mixed through it years ago?

Roughcaster.

I know that the grey plaster used on laths has lots of coal dust in it, or at least in Wales it dose, but it would be coated with a white top coat. If you have exposed undercoat plaster I would pva it then fill with filler or maybe re-skim.

Thanks for advice;

With a little more research, believe fine coal dust was mixed.
You were correct about its usage in Wales and also Yorks.
