been having starter motor problems, engages but doesn`t start (makes that horrible screeching noise)
had motor removed and it appeared cogs were worn,so had it replaced on mechanics advice.
however,a week on and I have the same starting problems.mechanic (self taught, not apprentice trained) seems at a bit of a loss, and I`m unimpressed at spending nearly £200 and still having the same problem.
any help/advice greatly appreciated.

cheers

Could be the solenoid.

at the risk of sounding a bit dim (car-wise,not generally :) ) is the solenoid the thing attached to the side of the starter motor? if so then that`s new as well.

with the starter removed, check the teeth on the flywheel ring gear. if they are damaged then its a new flywheel i'm afraid. don't think you can get a ring gear anymore.

Sure they actually changed it and not just cleaned it and put it back on?

that horrible screeching noise....... err you mean a grinding noise ?
is the battery charging correctly ?
Does the battery hold its charge ?
Has using the old dodgy starter worn the edge off the flywheel ring ?

£70/90 for a starter usually ..... Unless it was a dealer part ......
you could of been supplied a duff starter motor :( (Thats recently happened to me .......... I'm gonna be on my back changing that freakin thing AGAIN this Saturday...... Whooooo Joy)

£200 for a starter motor is steep. If you take the old one in you can often get an exchange unit for about £50 - £60 and they are really easy to change, even I managed mine and believe me I am terrible at fixing cars.

£200 is freak all for a Hyundai ...... £350/600 is the norm from a dealer

Ok its not a Hyundai ....... I just thought I would fiddle with the thread

you should always ask for your old unit back so they can give you the speil that they have replaced it with new, they can then explain to you in detail whether you understand it or not, what was wrong with it, as for a reciept and guarantee of work, then in a week when it goes wrong, get back to them and give them loads of grief saying you are going to the local paper etc.

if they are a genuinely good company, they wont want to at all, to go that far, if not, and they are slightly suspect, and are not forthcoming with getting you sorted quickly, then get onto the press asap, local=not much done, national=lots done, grovelling and possibly some ££ for your effort in making a story where somebody has to be accountable.

I have the same problem. My car's a Fiesta 1.3 1996. It's had this problem since the car was new. I've had 2 new starters put on and changed the ring gear cos it was worn too. You may have damaged your new starter motor because it damaged itself on the worn ring gear that should have been replaced too but I feel you have the same problem as me. I spent £400 replacing both but noise was back within a month and is now worse than ever.
Noticed you put this problem up a few years ago and wondered if you'd found the fault, or can anyone else help me.
I'm interested in the idea of it being the solonoid cos I have an idea it may be an electrical problem with the battery not giving enough boost to the starter when it is weak, just my opinion, anyone know more?
Another theory I've been told is clutch dust clogging the starter. This would I assume mean a problem with the clutch producing too much dust, does this sound a possibility?

I have the same problem, did you get yours fixed. Look at my posts to see my problem, am desperate to find people who have had the same problem and fixed it, so far spent £500 and problem keeps returning.

hi felix, a quick update for your benefit. changing the starter didn`t solve the problem so I had to have the flywheel changed.
This has been ok for over a year, but the problem has now started reoccuring, albeit occasionally.
I`ve sought further advice and the suggestion was that starter and flywheel should both be renewed at the same time. renewing the starter allows the worn flywheel to ruin starters teeth and vice versa.
I`m not going to chuck any more money at this problem, don`t think it`s worth it so I`ll live with it. I`d advise you to do the same if it`s not too much of a problem.
cheers, oeeeeeeg.

Thanks, I've did what you did too, changed the starter, problem came back, then changed starter and flywheel at the same time cos of the same reason you were told, but problem came back. Have since put up my own question which you'll find if you search my posts. Have been told by someone with same problem that I need to change starter to a proper Ford one, more expensive but has worked for them.
Ford garage said 1996 Fiestas had starter motor problem and should have been recalled, was yours a 1996 1.3 Fiesta?
Was your new starter a Ford made one?
Know what you mean about putting up with it, I don't mind but when I go to work at 5.30am it wakes the neighbours up. I just can't afford a new car and apart from this problem it's a great runner.
