Hoping someone can tell me the answer. Have recently been having very large gas bills and believe it to be our boiler.

We moved into our house and have nothing but trouble with the heating.

Have just changed the water and heating to timed 530-1030 then 1600-2230

HOWEVER noticed that the boiler keeps coming on and off throughout the day when its not meant to be on

Could this be a faulty boiler or timer switch?

Do you have motorised zone valves ?? if so could be jammed opem thus operating the micro switch which will give power to the boiler !!

Basically the boiler must be getting its power from somewhere !!

No its a digital timer - if thats what you meant?

I assume you have a hot tank in the airing cupboard??

In that area near the pump with be either 1, 3 port zone valve or 2 , 2 port zone valves ... 1 may be stuck open !!

We have recently had the 3 port value replaced as when the Heating was switched off it would still heat the radiators.

So was the problem there before it was replaced ??

It may be best to get an engineer out to test and trace where the boilers getting its power from when turned off from programmer !!

Think the problem has always been there. I know that when we had a service from British Gas they said it was wired in wrong - but always thoguht this was part of their sales pitch to make me by one the their new systems.

Thanks for your help

It would pay to get the controls properly checked by a good engineer who knows heating controls .... now this does not mean an electrician as not many understand heating controls !!

thanks again.

So you think its mostly the cause? Would this explain why the boiler is always firing up and why my gas bill is so big?

If the controls are wired wrong and giving a permanent live to the boiler switch live then yes that will burn gas when you dont want it to..

What I would do in your position is call a registered engineer to check the whole system including boiler to make sure its working correctly !!

Please check his ID card when he arrives and also check the back of the card as thats where it shows what he can work on

Can you describe your house and the loft insulation and say exactly what you gas bills are and if they are estimated or read meter readings?

What is the make and model of the boiler?

A typical three bed house unoccupied during the working day curently has a gas bill of about £900 p.a. at current gas prices on a credit meter. £1200 on a card meter.

I suspect there is little real increase in consumption due to the firing during the day but that problem should be sorted out as advised.

Is the house detached or semi or terraced?

If the annual gas consumption was costing four times £191 then that is very typical of most three bed homes.

Until you answer the questions I first asked then I cannot better assess the heat loss.

You say they are extimated but have you compared the meter readings on which they are assessed with the actual meter readings?
