I want to join the Utube music community by posting a few guitar/vocal covers (Beatles, Paul Simon etc). What I want to know is: Which one is best for that sort of thing? JohnD often posts about Which magazine - maybe he can tell me which came out best? Any ideas anyone? Obviously sound is important.

I've had a couple of £ 20 web cams and found the pics were very good but was a bit disappointed with the sound.

Suggest a £50 one from Argos. You can try it out for quality and exchange within 16 days if no good. :D

Any names? I find Logitech stuff pretty good.

Ive found that a tv card with composite in connectors linked up to a camcorder gives superior quality over your average webcam.

Or one of those composite to usb convertors will do.

Had a look at Which? best buys. They are:

Logitech QuickCam Ultra Vision

* Price: £53
* Score: 78%

Logitech Quickcam ultra vision

The best webcam on test; it’s expensive but good-looking. It also boasts great video and sound quality, an excellent mounting mechanism and a wide-angle lens.

This expensive webcam’s looks impress and it’s 1.3 megapixel sensor and high frame rate delivered smooth, high quality video for live chat.

On the downside, it suffers from limited camera movement and does not have a separate headset.

Creative Live! Cam Optia AF

* Price: £55
* Score: 75%

Creative Live! Cam Optia AF

The Creative Live! Cam Optia AF is a strong performer that’ll please even the most demanding PC user.

This camera did everything that was asked of it, performing strongly in terms of both image and sound quality. Its wide-angle lens and autofocus capability work well, and the sensitive microphone means you won’t miss out on even the quietest sounds.

It’s supplied with a headset which will improve voice chat quality. The software provided lets you implement good privacy and parental controls, as well as implementing lots of fun special effects.

It’s let down slightly by its low-light performance, which isn’t as good as some, and the installation process wasn’t great either.

Pros: Good audio and video performance, fun software effects, headset included

Cons: Below average low-light performance and ease of installation

Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000

* Price: £30
* Score: 75%

Logitech QuickCam Pro 5000

An excellent value all-rounder, this traditional looking webcam delivers good all-round performance.

It has great software and an impressive flat-panel monitor mounting mechanism, although background noise can be a problem.

Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000

* Price: £50
* Score: 75%

Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000

The Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 is a feature-packed webcam that performs brilliantly, and is a worthy addition to anyone’s PC.

Its rapid autofocus and face-tracking features work to keep you in the picture at all times, and the high resolution and image quality impressed our testers. Logitech provide plenty of software for you to play with, and as well as tweaking the camera’s settings you can play around with plenty of special effects, letting you turn yourself into a shark or an alien.

It has a wide viewing angle and it’s straightforward to set up and use. The only minor downside is the microphone which isn’t as sensitive as some of the others on test - meaning that you might miss the quieter sounds if you’re using it to listen to a whole room. But if you’re chatting face to face or using a headset microphone you’ll have no problems.

Pros: Wide angle lens, good software, fast autofocus, good quality sound, good image resolution and quality

Cons: The microphone could be more sensitive

Creative Live! Cam Voice

* Price: £54
* Score: 73%

Creative Live! Cam voice

This webcam excels where background noise is a problem, and is ideal for video chat.

It had great noise-cancelling features and motion detection software. However, it's tricky to mount to a flat-panel display.

Logitech QuickCam Pro for Notebooks (AF)

* Price: £62
* Score: 73%

Logitech QuickCam Pro for Notebooks (AF)

The Logitech QuickCam Pro for Notebooks (AF) is a verstatile webcam that’s great for laptop users.

Its rapid autofocus and face-tracking features work to keep you in the picture at all times, and the high resolution and image quality are impressive. Logitech provide plenty of software for you to play with, and as well as tweaking the camera’s settings you’ll find plenty of special effects such as shark or alien skins.

Its design means that it clips easily on to a laptop screen. But this also means that it’s not ideal for desktop PC users.

It has a wide viewing angle, and it’s straightforward to set up and use. The only minor downside is the microphone, which isn’t as sensitive as some of the others on test - meaning that you might miss the quieter sounds if you’re using it to listen to a whole room. But if you’re chatting face to face (or using a headset microphone) you’ll have no problems.

Pros: Wide angle lens, good software, fast autofocus, good quality sound, good image resolution and quality

Cons: The microphone could be more sensitive

When I get it sorted and post a couple on Utube I'll provide a link. (Nah mega - not being intimate),

BTW, Mega, no-one has any idea where the original Debbie actually went . She just dropped off the radar never to be seen again.
