One thing that struck me when they replaced the Gneeric Lambda Probe was that they did not disconnect the battry as the car clock was still correct when I driove out of the garage.

I have read that the Lambda probe are of the adaptive type in that when replacing the sensor ypou need to:-

"Disconnect the vehicle's battery - this is especially important on vehicles with adaptive ECU mappings - the settings stored in the engine computer will have become corrupted by any faulty sensors and leaving the battery off for a couple of hours will reset the ECU to factory settings.
car may take a little longer to start than usual and may not idle correctly for a few seconds due to the idle speed controller settings having been reset when the battery was disconnected. Also, the ECU will also need to adapt once more to your style of driving over the first few hours of operation"

Is this correct for this type of Golf and engine ECU? Could this be the problem why the Emmission are still wrong after the Lambda Probe was replaced?

Whilst I dont know what your garage might have done, many car clocks have a backup bettery which keeps the time going!

Thebest garages would always reset the clock if it did not show the correct time. Those are the ones that put a plastic sheet over the seats before they start!

When I had a company car they would also wash the car after a service!

It wont hurt to disconnect the battery overnight. This should reset the ecu to 'learn' mode. It will use all the factory default settings for all the sensors until it learns what signals they're giving. Usually takes half hour or so of driving to re-learn, so don't take it straight for an MOT after you do it!

Hi Tony / Neo

When the car was retested with the Generic lambda porbe in it was noted that they siad the CAT had also failed! Do CAT's fail suddenly or there symtoms prior to it failing? I had as previously sprayed Wynn's Carb and Fuel Injector cleaner in the throttle body at very high revs 3000 + but not near RED to clean the Throttle Body and injectors, would this have destroyed the CAT making it fail?

I have also asked VW and they have stated you must not fi generic lambda's to the Golf AEE Engine as they work at twice the heater voltage!

I have now obtained a VW lambda for the Engine will fit and clear ECU by removing the NEG terminal for 1 hour and have it re-tested after drving around for 30 Minutes or so.

Thank you all for all your help. The Car passed its MOT when a Genuine VW Lambda probe was used. Many thanks.
