Buidling Gym in my Garden

No real need for treated wood unless you can afford the extra piece of mind.

Worth getting regularised or even CLS timber as this will be a constant thickness therefore easier to get a decent joint for the plasterboard.

OK the base is in and the walls are up, ceiling nearly done. Ive learnt alot doing this myself.

Lessons learnt. (advice for diyer's not pros!)

Ordering
Have a good phone around building suppliers, if they don't seem that helpful fck them off, someone else will give you a deal, list price or trade price etc, bullsh't it's about how they compare to Jewsons/Travis etc. And make sure you have your quantities ready, so you get best discount. Youll be surprised how much you can talk em down, i took the lowest price on each product and used that against my final supplier and got all those prices in my deal.

Think about your lengths check what lengths material comes in and check what lengths will be dispatched, for example i ordered some cedar cladding, turned up in all different lengths, as my shed is 2.3m tall alot of wastage from 3metre lengths :eek:/ resolved now!

Construction
Check and double check your corners for squareness, make sure you brace them after you've checked, use the 345 rule as you go along to check all is well.
If you're doing alot of nailing buy a fking nail gun!! Got an IM350 for my birthday and it must of saved me a good half a days work and actually less noisy than hammering in. Oil it every time you use it and you should suffer minimal jams.

Synthaproof
Great stuff, paints on and dries v quick to form a waterproof tar/rubber coating. About £12 for 5 litres tin of that covered all external walls of my gym in a thick coat plus the roof. So i got peace of mind in case it pi$$es it down before i felt the roof or fibreglass it, not sure what yet.

Mistakes to avoid

CELOTEX CAN CAUSE CREAKING
Well i think ive fcked my floor up slightly :eek:/ I say that as the bastard creaks when i walk on it, constructed with 6x2 @ 400centres on 22mm ply so should be solid, I did pack 100mm celotex beetween the joists and i put it in tight, and flush with the top of the joists sitting on battens.
BUT i fear the flex in the ply pushes on the celotex which in turn makes it rub against the timbers and creak, i put in screws every 6inches up and down joists so the ply is well and truly fixed, so i can't think what else it could be, bit of a faux pas though :( Anyone care to comment???

PLYWOOD AND PLASTERBOARD ARE DIFFERENT SIZES
One other thing i never realised was the difference between Ply and Plaster sheeting.
I spaced my roofing joists every 406 for 1220 sheets and then found out plaster board is 8x4 ie 1200 :( my old man was trying to call me to make sure i trimmed 20mm off my sheets. Oh Arse!!

Anyway im about to wire it all up inside and sound proof it, as i want some kicking tunes in my gym when im working without the neighbours wetting themselves, and believe me my neighbours are bellends with nothing better to do. (another story i may post here)

So ive decided to use 15mm soundblock boarding with 70mm celotex in the walls for insulation, ive read about using rockwool or some sort of dense insulation instead, any comments welcome.

Cheers!

Use rockwool, celotex is noisy (as you've discovered ;) )
