    Astra Wipers fusing

Seized/jammed motor = dead short. Wiring could be shorted, of course, but with motors always check they can move first. Note that even if you think that you've disconnected the power from it by removing the switch, it could be stalled trying to park itself. Ben.

    replacing a boilermate F&E tank

Yep, there's an existing 22mm vent pipe, which I want to extend. I think what I was really asking was what should be used to connect that to the top of the new plastic tank, assuming that leaving it dangling through a jagged hole would lead to cries of horror (the tank I have seen has no...

    One For Vehicle Electrians.

The more conventional setup would have the main fuse as close to the battery as possible (in your case, after the starter motor) and (perhaps more importantly, see below) to run the output from the altenator directly to the battery +ve. Also, you say the main feed for the fuel pump etc comes...

    replacing a boilermate F&E tank

...my annual Boilermate post... Well, it still works fine, but the remote header tank is seeping water and has helpfully rotted away the shelf it's sat on, which is now held together by it's own paint. Carpentry notwithstanding, I'm going to fit a new F&E tank. A genuine spare appears to...

HOTPOINT WMA 60 washing machine problems

If it has the same motor as mine (!): On the opposite end of the motor to the belt there is a small housing with what looks like a giant washer pressed into it. If you spin the motor you will see the end of the shaft turning through the hole in the middle of the washer. Around that end of...

    Boilermate - "efficient"? Reprise.

Update: It's cold, so let's put on the heating! Or rather, let's not. The suggested modification in the Boilermate manual means that the boiler does not get any demand for heat except from the hot water controls, which now of course happens only intermittently with the timer fitted...

    Hob Gas Ignition

errr... seemed to respond to being cleaned properly. Ben.

    Hob Gas Ignition

Pretty bog standard hob. 4 Gas burners and an ignition button, press the ignition button and the spark unit delivers about 1 healthy spark per second to all 4 burners. Three of the burners light after a couple of sparks. The other one sits there oozing gas as a considerable rate for several...

    Boilermate - "efficient"? Reprise.

My last thread was locked after it descended into a bit of a bun-fight. At the risk of kicking off again I wanted to put up a conclusion in case anyone comes across it in a search. Here's my original question: Well, I fitted the timer, and my gas usage has plummeted. Furthermore, I...

    Boilermate - "efficient"?

Thanks for all the comments! I'm actually quite pleased with the thing, apart from all the residual heat and the huge bills of course :) Everyone on the development has a boilermate fitted, I expect we do not do well in terms of gas usage. I expected there was some meaning to...

    Boilermate - "efficient"?

As per title, I have a Boilermate in my flat which works well and provides oodles of hot water 24 hours a day. However, I'm a sad single bloke, I don't use all that much hot water (I shower, honestly) and my gas bills are huge. The manual for the boilermate states a number of times that it is...
