Flow switches generally just get stuck/blocked with scale and the diverter valve usually need's a new diaphragm if its that type or if its motorised valve a new actuator
So if you go back to the boiler you should have two "lives" now going into the boiler wiring terminal one from the spur to power boiler/programmer and one switched to fire it up
Where does the switched live from the room stat go - if you follow/trace it back to the boiler terminal you can check it is actually signaling the boiler to fire - the fact that the stat's lit up like a xmas tree and there's power to the boiler doesn't mean that what its signaling (the stat) is...
It say's just that "burning oil" I looked that up and it's just another way of saying 28 sec so thats ok although that is no guarantee thats what ts in the tank I suppose. Would the thick black smoke start suddenly or would it gradually build up over time ?

condensate can do - in the combustion chamber oil or water oil i presume ?
No that is a concern of mine I thought if I took some "good" oil with me and run it up on that for a while and see what happens, other than that I don't know how to check the oil quality - seems funny how its run 6 months then get a delivery last week then soot.
