    Safe or unsafe floorboards

There are airbricks on 2 sides. Pulling up a floorboard to check the condition of the joists means pulling up the grippers and part of the hardboard. Not easy to do without causing damage - just what I wanted to avoid. Thanks anyway.

    Safe or unsafe floorboards

I've poked the holes in both airbricks. The stick goes over a foot through one of them but hits something hard about 8" through the other. I have regular nocturnal visits from a slug but the walls have been damp-proofed. How do I check ventilation in the subfloor?

    Safe or unsafe floorboards

I planned to remove the horrible crimson carpet in my dining room and sand and varnish the floorboards. There are big gaps between the boards upstairs but from what I'd glimpsed when my central heating was revamped, I guessed the downstairs floor was better. The carpet is on underlay which is...

gaps in floor boards, your thoughts

The previous owner of my house used self adhesive vinyl tiles in my bathroom. They were so hard to remove that British Gas cut straight through them and underlying hardboard upgraded the central heating. Not a pretty sight so I thought about exposing the floorboards but there are gaps of up to...

    antiquing skirting

Wanted to replace the current 4" chamfered skirting that 's around the house with 6 " torus. BUT - the torus is thicker and wouldn't even fit behind some of the radiators let alone under some of the electric sockets and carpet strips. So what I think I need is some type of mounding that I can...

    blistering on an interior wall

The weather doesn't affect it. I have similar patches next to one of my own unused fireplaces they don't blister even though the staining eventually seeps through after using a stain stop. Beneath the plaster that does blister is a stone or brick wall separating my house from my neighbours and...

    blistering on an interior wall

An area on an interior plaster wall adjoining my neighbour's chimney has a rust coloured patch. I've treated this 2 -3 times with cuprinol damp stop on and painted over it with emulsion but after a few weeks the wall starts to blister again from under the damp stop. Any ideas how I can deal with...

    Waterseal removal

Thanks. Will give it a try. The BDI stuff was useful too.

    Waterseal removal

I want to remove it because patches are already coming off with wear so it's clearly not a durable finish and certainly wasn't made for floors.

    Waterseal removal

A long time ago, my stone flag kitchen floor was sealed with Thompson's waterseal. Thompson's tell me the only way to remove it is with white spirit. I've tried it and I can guarantee that it doesn't, even after generous doses of Nitromors. Anyone got any ideas?
