    Best paint for staircase handrail

That certainly reads like a good one for me to try. What is its "edge pickup" like? I have been trying out a tin of Bedec Aqua-Advanced on my skirting, and the edge is scuffing up worse than any paint I have ever used before - in under 1 minute in fact!

    Best paint for staircase handrail

I know it's best to varnish them as timber, but this was an already painted old set of bannisters and I have decided I can't face stripping it all. I have looked at umpteen paints and they all say "avoid areas of high wear such as handrails". What's the least worst paint to use? I prefer...

Highest rung safe for stair ladder

Well I have come back to report that the manufacturers finally got back to me, and the answer is it's up to and inclusive of the pivot step, so yes you can stand on the rung where the two sides meet.

Highest rung safe for stair ladder

I have one of those combi ladders that can adjust into a stair ladder. The instructions say do not stand above where it's hinged (ie the rung that the red hooks have hooked onto) I just want to double check that "not above" means the hooked rung itself is ok to stand on, just not any of the...

Aluminium door section open to the elements

No one ever heard of a door like this?

Aluminium door section open to the elements

I removed a screwed-in burglar alarm thing from an aluminium back door (hinged) that was fitted before we moved into the house, and as I did so I noticed I could see the sky through the screw holes. I never really thought about how these doors are made before, but basically it is made out of...

    Core drilling large holes

No wonder the place I first tried to order the heater from were very reluctant to sell to me unless I had an existing flue already! Heh well it sounds like the core drilling method for this is outside my scope, so I shall go for plan B, make the hole with my normal tools and hacking out...

    Core drilling large holes

I am having a gas heater fitted, but because the gas fitter is a family member, we are planning to keep down costs by having me prepare the flue hole myself. It requires a 230mm diameter hole in a 9" standard Victorian brick wall. I can't find a) any core drill bits that size and b) any power...

    Reglue water-damaged laminated board?

Don't know if I used the right word when I said laminate - it's just that white skin that you get on MDF bathroom furniture, not something I applied myself with contact adhesive.

    Reglue water-damaged laminated board?

Due to a leak already discussed in the plumbing forum, I now have a tiny bit of laminate lifting at the bottom of my high-gloss WC base cabinet, where the MDF swelled when wet. Now it's not so bad that I couldn't disguise it wth some white filler. But before I settle for that, is there...

Slow ooze down thread of flush assembly

Sadly, you're probably right. But I'm still eager to hear from anyone who can say "Oh I sprayed mine with MiracleSprayX and it stopped the leak!", so I'll hold off from doing anything other than changing the towel under it for a couple of days in the hopes...

Slow ooze down thread of flush assembly

My new toilet has been fitted for a few days, and I have a leak. It is an Ideal Standard toilet complete with Ideal standard concealed cistern (pushbutton flush) and cabinet. Although I checked the flush assembly backnut was as tight as it would go - it was factory assembled anyway, but they...

    Scared of cutting pipe!

I think it is 99.99% certain it is not connected to *anything*. I don't like the idea of paying a couple of hundred quid just to have the overwhelming probability confirmed :( Supposing a gas-safe engineer came out to see to this for me, what steps would they take? How would they go about...

    Scared of cutting pipe!

We don't have a household income currently. Therefore all work I can legally do myself will be done by myself. I am sure you know what I am likely to be charged for calling someone out.
