    Tap removal

Yeah that’s what I originally assumed but there’s absolutely no movement in it at all and doesn’t appear to separate - couldnt even get a Stanley blade under it.

    Tap removal

Probably a stupid question but how do I remove these taps to replace the cartridge?? Had similar taps before where the caps come off to allow screw holding tap handles to be removed. These caps don’t appear to come off (either pull or unscrew) and are part of the handle…

    2 light switch setup

Left picture switch has a sheathed twin & earth (black and red) with red in common and black in L2, sheathed single black in L1, and a sheathed single core and earth (red) which is wired into the common as well. Is there an easy way to test if a wire is continuous?

Hole through concreter block and beam floor

A concrete beam and block floor is a suspended floor?… As long as you don’t damage the concrete beams you could break out a full block if you wanted to - can then easily reinstate with a new block.

    2 light switch setup

Both switches are just standard 2-way switches, neither are dimmers. Both switches have a twin + earth (old black and red wiring), and there’s an additional black wire with grey sheathing that runs between the L1 terminals. And yes Blup I can confirm all of the wires are copper colour…

    2 light switch setup

No other wires at the boxes other than what’s already connected to the switches in the photos. A multimeter and an electric screwdriver…

    2 light switch setup

Moved into a new house and we have 2 switches in the dining room (one near each door at opposite ends of the room). They don’t operate as id expect with 2 way switching where both switches can turn the light on and off. One of the switches seems to act as a ‘master switch’ and has to be left in...

    Approved for new build

Assume its a flat roof? Would be far simpler to just span the roof joists all the way across between the external walls and do away with the roof steelwork completely If a solid timber joist is too deep for the span then have a look at posi-joists.

What to measure from for depth of footings?

If you work to approved document A, minimum concrete thickness is 150mm. Although I've had building inspectors in the past claim that reinforcement is required in any concrete footing less than 300mm thick, so have just worked with 300mm as minimum thickness for a mass concrete foundation...

Negotiate house sale price for prospective building work?

I've just had our survey back on a late Victorian mid-terrace house - first time buyer. Nothing serious highlighted other than the roof - which as I expected has no roof membrane. Not really much discussion in the report other than stating that the roof should be stripped and a new membrane...

Foundation for an internal garage conversion to kitchen

Depends on what's there at the moment - doubt the existing garage slab edge will extend far enough out for you to build the outer leaf of your new wall on? Might also be a foundation there already - sometimes there's a foundation below the garage door opening even though there's no wall

    Leylandii hedge and Foundation

True, although at 50cm away from the tree you still won’t be outside of its influence zone if the soil is cohesive. It was more of a general comment about people assuming that just removing a tree is a fix-all solution for building near trees, which seems to be a fairly common misconception...

    Leylandii hedge and Foundation

You'd need to get a plasticity test done. If you have a local geotechnical engineering/lab testing company you might be able to get them to do the testing if you drop samples off - someone I know had a local company test samples for the same scenario and charged about £50 each sample (although...

Filling a suspended floor - Will the filled in weight impact the adjoining wall?

Guessing the floor to your lounge is suspended timber - are you sure the kitchen floor isn't also suspended but just with a suspended concrete slab? 5.5ft is too much really to be backfilling to form a ground bearing slab - with new houses anything above 600mm of fill below a slab and you'd be...
