So it be better to not confuse OP with incorrect information.

Just to clarify NEUTRAL and SWITCHED LIVE are NEVER the same thing and can only change if an existing cable is reused for a different purpose.

The colour of the wire is BLACK and NOT neutral.

The wire is copper coloured

Both switches are just standard 2-way switches, neither are dimmers.

Both switches have a twin + earth (old black and red wiring), and there’s an additional black wire with grey sheathing that runs between the L1 terminals.

And yes Blup I can confirm all of the wires are copper colour…

There is an additional red in the left picture not accounted for.

Have you looked in the light fitting at all?

There are a number of options in the way this has been wired but it's appearing the blacks in either L1 or L2 are not continuous

Left picture switch has a sheathed twin & earth (black and red) with red in common and black in L2, sheathed single black in L1, and a sheathed single core and earth (red) which is wired into the common as well.

Is there an easy way to test if a wire is continuous?

The easiest way is to use the multimeter in Ω (ohms) or buzzer and a long piece of wire in place of one of the regular probes.
MAKE SURE POWER IS OFF BEFORE ATTEMPTING THIS TEST to avoid damage.

How may light fittings are there and have you attempted to look at the way it is/they are wired?
