    Painting an MDF window sill

Recently had a new double-glazed bay window installed with an MDF sill. The sill needs painting. How do I go about this? Should I sand and seal the edges with a primer? Also, is it recommended to use full gloss or should I use silk? Or is this just personal preference? Thanks!

Laying quarry tiles on an ash floor

Looking for some advice, hope this is the right forum! We have solid brick paved floors, with the bricks apparently just lying on an ash (at least its some kind of powdery substrate. We had to lift and discard some of the bricks in one corner of the dining room because they were too badly...

Internal damp - Restoration of Quarry Tiles

Yes - for the record - I'm 99% sure that what has happened is that moisture has been rising through the tiled floors. This would not be a problem but the floors were covered in laminate on one side and carpet on the other. The waterproof underlays meant the moisture had nowhere to go, hence...

Internal damp - Restoration of Quarry Tiles

OK, so here's some photos... This shows the damp patch on the wall and the radiator pipes I thought were causing it. There obviously was a leak there but it's equally obviously old and the pipes are dry. This is where the hall way joins the dining room. Note the condition of the...

Internal damp - Restoration of Quarry Tiles

Yes, the solid floors were obviously laid in place of the original suspended wood floors. However, this must have been done quite a while ago as they are obviously very old quarry tiles. As such, there is no damp proofing under the tiles which is why the non-breathable modern underlays were...

Internal damp - Restoration of Quarry Tiles

OK, so after having a complete waste of time and money damp surveyor in, a bit of googling reveals that quary tiles should never just be carpeted or otherwise covered over with plastic or non-breathable materials. The floors were actually wet to the touch below the underlays because they...

Internal damp - Restoration of Quarry Tiles

I have a problem with damp on an internal wall and I'm baffled about where it coming from. The wall is totally internal - doesn't have contact with an outside wall. There is a radiator against it on one side, but the pipework there is all dry. It seems the floors are solid and probably...

    Spluttering hot water

OK, all the valves seem to be full open apart from one valve at the bottom of the cylinder which was loose and can turn either way. How can I tell if this is the right valve or not?

    Spluttering hot water

Hello all, I have a vented hot water/GCH system. The hot water has been spluttering for some years now after I had the GCH pump replaced. I thought it would get better once the air had worked through, but this hasnt happened. Where is all this air coming from? How can I (or a plumber)...

    Re-tiling a hearth

Hi all, Firstly, I have never ever in my life done any tiling so excuse my complete pig-ignorance of the subject matter. We tore down some old cupboards, lifted carpets and opened up a fireplace. We found the hearth was tiled. Very nice, but the tiles were badly damaged so we lifted them...

Petrol cap wont screw down properly

Bit of a strange one this, but I have an Einhell rotavator and the petrol cap wont screw down properly. Its always at a bit of an angle no matter how I try which means petrol leaks out over the allotment. Not ideal. Any ideas on how to fix this thing?
