    Moving an inspection chamber

I have an inspection chamber that is located in my garden that I would like to move, if possible. The chamber has three drains running in to it, two from my house and one from a neighbour. The drain then runs along the side of the house and out to the front to join the main drain running down...

Handrail or newel post on direction change

I am just about to embark on replacing the existing newel post, spindles and hand rail in my victorian house. The current handrail sits very low and the gap between the spindles is larger than modern standards, in places the gap is 110mm, and with a toddler about it really needs addressing...

    Serious Mould Problem

I'm pretty sure this is what happened. We live in a semi built in around 1895 and the slate damp course had apparently been breached. In fairness there was damp up the wall, to about 1m, that was causing the wallpaper to peel of and a lot, if not all, the plaster was blown.

    Serious Mould Problem

I am currently having a serious mould problem behind my sofa and was wondering whether I could pick some brains on the forum to help solve the cause. I went to clean behind and underneath the sofa today but found a large amount of mould on the skirting and the wall itself. I re-caulked the...

    Crack in Pebbledash

Hi, I noticed some discolouration on the paintwork in my lounge. When I checked the wall from the outside I noticed a small crack in the pebbledash which seems to marry up to where the discolouration is inside. As a temporary fix, because I eventually plan to replace the pebbledash, what...

    Concrete on external wall

Hi, On my 1895 built property there is a 30cm or so bit of concrete that goes along the front and side of the property at the bottom. In places it is cracked and broken off and either needs to be repaired or replaced completely. As the pointing is all lime based my question is what concrete/mix...

    Replacing a Light Switch

Hi, I am trying to replace a lightswitch but have run into one small problem which isn't helped by the fact the lighting setup is a bit weird so hopefully I'm able to explain the setup correctly. In the lounge there is a two way switch which operates either of the lights in the lounge. One of...

    Loft Brickwork

I was putting away the Christmas decorations in the loft today and it reminded me to ask your advice on some brickwork in the loft. The wall in question is the external solid wall which has pebbledash on the outside. There appear to be some missing bricks and the mortar in some places is non...

    Damp Chimney Foundation

Hi All, We have had a damp issue in our 1895 built house which resulted in a new injected chemical damp course being applied. Today I noticed that under the carpet is a concrete chimney foundation for a chimney that was removed before I purchased the house. The rest of the subfloor is wooden...

    Hole in brickwork

I've been fitting some new loft insulation and have noticed that in one part of the loft there is a hole in the brickwork where day light is visible. I would estimate this hole to be about the size of a pound coin. The loft is on two levels and I cannot get closer than 5 metres to the hole to...

What to seal inside of a window with

hi, first post here so I hope it's in the right place. I have the seal around an internal side of a bathroom window coming apart, it's not silicon, looks like some kind of grout. My question is, as its falling apart, should I seal it with silicon or the grout type material that's already there...
