    Plasterboarding around a velux.

Thanks. Will give it a go. I'd be happy if it looks even half normal. One day this loft will be finished and I won't know what to do with myself.

    Cutting a thick metal pipe

Thanks all The pipe itself was open at one end and the other was cemented in to a new wall we had built so it's definitely not used. It used to head towards the old water tank. Recon it was the water input pipe once.

    Cutting a thick metal pipe

Nope. Partition wall goes right through. In the end I followed my wife's idea and layed several dust blankets down under and around it. Sparks a plenty, and at least two small fires in the dust blanket, but easily put out. And am now pipe free.

    Cutting a thick metal pipe

Hi all I have a thick metal pipe to cut. It's like a scaffolding pole but more narrow. I think it's an old gas or water pipe. It's in the loft. I have an angle grinder but I'm worried about the sheer amount of sparks coming off. While the loft is full of yellow insulation stuff, it's also full...

    Plasterboarding around a velux.

HI all I'm doing up the loft myself (not to regs, just as a dads/mums-room to escape the beasts). We have a velux that the builders put in just to give the loft some light and I've now reached this bit of the room and need to plaster board. I won't be plastering, just boarding. I figure...

Advice on using second hand Velux windows

Hi all I'm looking at buying a couple of used Velux windows from eBay. I've watched a view videos on how to install them and I'm fairly confident that I can do it. Has anyone done this before and have any advice before I start? Olly

    Insulated plasterboard or not?

Hi all I'm currently insulating my loft to make it in a den for me to escape whenever anyone calls my name. I'm using foil coated insulation board of 50mm depth. To save my sanity, could I instead use insulated plasterboard, and just screw it on top of the rafters? Or perhaps both? :(

    Celotex alternatives

Hi all I'm finally lining my loft. I was looking at 25mm or 50mm celotex to go underneath the plaster board but I'm also keen to not have to sell a kidney to do so. Before I commit, can anyone recommend a more affordable alternative for insulation to go between the roof tiles and the plaster...

    Veranda rafter length

Hi My previous post was deleted. Not sure why. Is there a way to work out what thickness of wood is needed for a given length of rafter? I'm building a 4m+ veranda and want to make sure the wood wont warp. Olly

    Lining the roof space

Hi all I have a loft space that I use a lot. I want to line the roof space with some insulation to keep the heat in, but also so that I can put some adhoc plasterboard up just to make it less dark and brown and a bit lighter. Currently the roof tiles aren't lined at all, they are just...

Treating soft wood cladding when building a shed

Hi all I want to replace a load of panelling on my old shed. I've found some shiplap to match what's there but it's softwood and untreated. What's the best stuff to use to give it a good 10 years of life outside in the wet? Can I use creosote? Or is there something more suitable? Olly

    water treatment for wet wood

Hi chaps. I have some supports in the shed that I've removed that are rotten. However some others are just wet. Is there some treatment I can use to help force the water out and prevent them from rotting without me needing to fully remove them? Olly

Wood preservatives for sheds. Good ones?

Hi chaps I have moved in to a house with a load of sheds. They are all old, but of very good quality (really thick wood and well kept). I want to top up the preservatives to keep the wood in good condition but I also wouldn't mind adding some colour. I also wouldn't mind preserving the...
