    retiling roof

I agree, the job of re-tiling my roof may simply not be practical as a DIY task and not having any experience would obviously make things difficult. Having said that nothing worth having ever comes easily and there are a lot of advantages which modern scaffolding, materials, tools etc would...

    retiling roof

I am planning to re-tile and install a membrane to the roof of my house. The roof has 6 slopes to it , 4 valleys and 3 gable ends involved in the section which needs to be re-tiled. (a lot of roof considering the size of house !) The tiles are simple clay tiles. Due to time constraints I would...

Tenon and mortis joints in door

What is the best way to join the rales and styles of an external door that is going to be painted ? I know that tenon and mortis joints are very strong but take some time to make. If you put strong dowels across the joints wouldn't that suffice.

    Polishing plaster

One of my neighbours was saying that when he had his walls re-plastered the finish was like glass. So when I skimmed the next wall in my house I tried giving it an extra good polish when finishing it off and sure enough the multi finish plaster ended up smooth as glass with a slight reflection...

    Retiling roof

I don't think I would fall (well, not more than once) but the height may slow me down and could take some of the pleasure out of it. It is certainly very high at the top. A good scaffold would help. The first couple of days I would be a bit hesitant but after that I think I would be up and...

    Retiling roof

The bituminous felts to the lay man seems more substantial for a temporary covering whilst work is in process. Some manufacturers of the breathable membranes claim they are suitable for temporary covering but I would want to test that out first. The thing is I wonder how long it takes to strip...

    Retiling roof

Thanks for advice on the dry valleys. The roof I have to do is all valleys and verges. I guess the smaller pieces of tiles need clips to hold them in the dry valley. I would set up a few prototypes on the ground before starting to practice getting it right at the valleys and verges. You are...

    Retiling roof

I have a 1930s detatched house which probably could do with being totally re tiled and having a membrane installed. The tiles are simple clay. The valleys have a lot of mortar falling into them with some loose tiles. The tiles at the Gables have separated out, there is no undercloaking and...
