One of my neighbours was saying that when he had his walls re-plastered the finish was like glass. So when I skimmed the next wall in my house I tried giving it an extra good polish when finishing it off and sure enough the multi finish plaster ended up smooth as glass with a slight reflection in it ! The only thing is when I painted it with mat emulsion it looked the same as the other walls I had done.

Polishing skim finish was an old practice, especially on ceilings - it showed pride in the work and attention to detail.
Sadly, it was a bad practice, and was discouraged by the guy who showed me the ropes - why, i dont remember, perhaps damp and decorating issues?
