Is there any way of telling if a hot water cylinder has a scale problem before trying to remove the top fixture. This is one of those fully foam insulated ones so tapping on the cylinder does not produce the reassung clang.
I find rolling a piece into a small ball and then rolling that over the bits you want picked up works fine. Also having slightly wet fingers stops it sticking quite so bad.

on the other hand - the valve is a drayton and is stuck on open. Is there a way to remove the chrome turning mechanism so that I can get a spanner on something. If I can do that then the problem resolves itself easier.
