    Point loads for heavy sculpture

Yes - it's going 1.5 metres away from an external wall, so I'm not too worried. It also has one of the building's 650x450 reinforced concrete beams, almost directly below where it's going, visible on the lower floor!

    Point loads for heavy sculpture

Thanks. Yes it might be an idea to get advice from a SE, but when I did that before they just did the calculations I'd done already and charged £400! The building manual says that the floor can take 6kn/m2 on EVERY square metre of the space, which is big (20mx 12m). It's a serious building...

    Point loads for heavy sculpture

Hello, I'm making some plinths and furniture for an art gallery. They want to install a sculpture weighing 1400kg on a floor that has a max load of 6kn per m2. The floor can only have 600kg per square metre. The existing (reinforced) base of the sculpture is 1m2. (Makes it way over max load). In...

    Roots in wall

Thanks for your reply. Yes the vegetation is gone now and the cracks have been filled. Still slightly stumped as to where the vegetation has entered, but I think it’s just where it could be seen on our neighbours roof. The attic is fine and I can’t find any other evidence of leaks or...

    Roots in wall

Hello, thanks for your response. 1. The leak was from big cracks in the render on our neighbours wall and vegetation growing there. 2. Suspended floor 3. Yes I will try and remove the bricks, clean and re-mortar, thanks. 4. Will do. 5. The roots must have come in from the neighbours roof...

    Roots in wall

While I’m here - I also have one loose brick. It’s wedged in but the mortar around it has failed and fallen out. Is it best just to get as much new mortar in as far as I can to secure it as much as possible?

    Roots in wall

We’ve had some water damage from a leak at the side of the house. There was quite a bit of vegetation growing up there. Leak is repaired and I’m removing plaster from the damaged area. I’m finding long, thin roots under the plaster. Should I be worried?

Wiring an LED driver to a 230v mains plug

Thanks for your reply. They will be fitted on the ceiling, where there is a power outlet, so I could attach all the elements in an enclosure up there.

Wiring an LED driver to a 230v mains plug

Hello, I need to wire an LED driver/power supply to a mains plug in order to power a bluetooth lighting timer (see photo) It seems to be a pretty simple job, but can anyone advise on the way I would shield the wires going to the plug? Is it possible to use heat shrink? Many thanks, Sam

    Cutting across ceiling joists

Yes I’ll be boarding the loft, but with loft legs, so won’t be holding it together much. In your opinion will cutting one further joist compromise the ceiling dangerously? I can’t seem to find any info or videos about installing loft hatches that cut across joists…

    Cutting across ceiling joists

Hello, I need to install a new ladder + loft hatch in my 1900's house. The opening for the old loft hatch is cut across the joists, rather than running along them, so two joists have already been cut. Because of high ceilings I will need a quite long folding ladder with a 1300mm opening, so...

    Skirting problem

Thanks, that’s very helpful. Do you know, is the RedLite filler similar to Red Devil onetime?
