    Gaps between skirting and wall

I don't think there will be a problem if I insist. None of the parties are being difficult. The question is more about whether the gaps be filled in. And is it normally the builder who does it, or the decorator? (And who would you expect to do a better job?)

    Gaps between skirting and wall

Been having an insurance reinstatement done after a water leak. The builders hired to do it have replaced some plaster and skirting boards. Only problem is there are some fairly large gaps between the plaster and the skirting at points. The builders say the decorators can fill these gaps in if...

Screwing in bulb temporarily kills power in cables

Solved now. I thought that if the pen is giving me faulty readings, and the circuit isn't live, then possibly it's the switch that's gone. It's a double dimmer switch, the other dimmer controls another two outside lights (maybe the false live reading was coming from this setup). I don't have a...

Screwing in bulb temporarily kills power in cables

    >Seems you have a volt drop problem, cables too long and inadequate csa to provide the required volts. Smaller wattage lamps might work. It won't be that, these lights have been working fine for years (originally installed by a proper electrician). I should have said that these are lights that...

Screwing in bulb temporarily kills power in cables

I have two outside lights on the same circuit and they weren't working, so I went to change the bulbs. One bulb had blown, but one was fine -- I tested it inside, and it still works. But it wasn't working with the outside lights, and neither did a new bulb. But using my current detector pen I...

    Connecting waste water pipes bodge-job

It is an Ikea sink, that I know, so probably the grey pipe is Ikea. The close-up photo was just to get some opinions on a quick-fix. If replacing the pipe is the general consensus I'll do a photo up under the sink where the pipe connects to the plughole.

    Connecting waste water pipes bodge-job

Here's some photos -- one with the pipes connected, and one with them unconnected (so you can see there's only a few centimetres of join possible). Is there a standard connector which would join them? Otherwise I may do what Hugh suggests and replace them, although it's not easy to get access to...

    Connecting waste water pipes bodge-job

There is a trap, it has a flexible pipe coming off it. Having had a closer look, this flexible pipe has a harder ending, and it goes into a hard pipe. Although one fits into the other, without something to hold them together, they're always threatening to come apart once water is flowing through...

    Connecting waste water pipes bodge-job

In my garage there's a sink built into a cabinet. It's very handy, but sometimes I get a water leak in the pipes at the bottom of the cabinet. Basically, whoever put this together has just shoved two flexible plastic pipes into each other (the one from the plughole, which goes into the one that...

Plastic coating to go over paint?

Okay, I shall go for either the car lacquer or the polyurethane varnish. Only question now is how long should I let the paint dry for? So far I've let it dry for 6 days. I did read some stuff that suggests that oil-based paints take a long time to really cure properly (weeks, maybe months)...

Plastic coating to go over paint?

Could be worth a try, but all the polyurethane varnish I've looked at says to use it on wood only.
