No!!! Capped chimney should be vented(if its capped it obviously means its not in use),this is for some air to circulate within the chimney breast to avoid damp,we recently had to do this on a site to comply with NHBC. SD Carps

Have you tried newton Newlath,this is specially made for use where ventilation is needed,plasterer can then either render/hardwall/skim a finish on after.......as for pic,cant see a thing so means nothing to me :wink: !!!! SD Carps

Dont be put off by the insulation in the floor/ceiling,it will also act as a bit of a sound deadener for those below,why not put kingspan or celotex inbetween the roof trusses,probably better than normal fibreglass pre boarding....as for the velux,these things seem to change all the time,unless...

I think what the lads mean by 'capped' is that it has been filled in on the pot,ie,the pot has been usually filled with ballast and then usually a 50-75mm cement slab on top of it,the only way you'll find out is to get up and have a look and see if the top of the pot is capped over with cement...

You can try acoustic fibrelgass as well as sound board(acoustic plasterboard),if your ripping out the plasterboard anyway it would be just as well to add both,failing that double up on the plasterboard,depends on just how much the noise bugs you!!! SD Carps

As above fella,not only will the cowl prevent any water getting in it will also stop any birds nesting in there,failing that,why not block it with some hardcore/concrete cap and stick some air bricks in the chimney stack to allow plenty of ventilation,all down to cost I suppose but cowl is...

I've fitted a number of the Sunpipe variety and had no probs(touchs wood :wink: ) at all,there are a few different ones around on the market so best to shop around for best deal,it is possible for a DIY'er to fit them,roof work is normally the place everyone worries about but you shouldn't have...

Madge I've fitted a number of these and they are very effective,monodraught even make one specifically for conservation houses/projects.One thing is for sure though,the conservation sunpipe is a damn sight more expensive than the standard one. Hope this helps SD Carps

Why not clad the beam in fire board rather than plasterboard,theres a few companies out there,with cape being one,Promat is another,you'd probably be best off cladding the beam rather than painting it with intumescent paint,it will hide it away rather than looking at a painted beam in the middle...

Just a thought Brumylad,did you check all depths against any nearby trees,it could cause you concern with ground movement if you have any reasonable sized trees in the garden. SD Carps

It might be worth raising the question to the surveyor about the properties of the air brick,ie,if at present you have clay bricks,ask about getting them changed to the plastic ones,I appreciate that they dont look no-where near as good but the ventilation from a plastic air brick is almost...
