Have encountered this problem before and it turned out to be corrosion where the earth strap bolts onto the front of the gearbox. A quick clean up and normal service was resumed.

Might as well, nothing to lose except time. Reckon some of the other bits might be resellable on ebay anyway, burner, pump etc....so might as well get it stripped down.
I'll see how it goes anyway and post the results.
Before you wind the piston back in the caliper, pull the seal back with a small screwdriver and spray some WD40 or penetrating oil around the seal. Makes it so much easier to wind piston in and minimises the risk of damaging the seal.

Easy to replace. 4 pipes and a connector.
Firstly you'll need to remove the wiper arms and scuttle panel around the base of the windscreen (various screws/clips). You'll see the valve sitting about the centre of the windscreen.
Pinch the pipes on the engine side with 2 pairs...
