    Professional inspection

There may be no specific requirements to get a certificate issued, but as you said it's strongly recommended because if someone was to hurt themselves you may be liable. I do a lot of inspections and the decision I make as to whether an installation is safe is dependant on many things. Some...

    Earth

If the word 'ground' means more to you than the word 'earth', I'd suggest you're looking in the wrong place. There is an 'Electrics outside the UK' forum which might suit you better. If the word 'ground' was used on this forum when refering to a connection to earth connection it would confuse...

    Soundproofing the neighbours

I decided diplomacy was the best solution for me. I did look into resilient bars and the like but the problem is you have to do a whole lot more than just the party wall in one room. You have to do the ceiling and the party wall in the room above...the price goes through the roof and you loose a...

    TYPE B / TYPE C MCB'S

I have got MK going throughout my house, either Logic Plus or various finishes of Edge. Top quality stuff but to be honest I think their board's are crap. If you want a standard domestic board I would reccommend Wylex over any other. If you want a decent board, cost no object, go for Merlin...

    TYPE B / TYPE C MCB'S

b-a-s has got the right idea. MCB's have the same maximum earth fault loop impedance for both 0.4 and 5 second disconnection times (in fact all breakers will trip within 100ms, hence why the requirements of both disconnection times are met). Due to the nature of breakers they have an either...

    I'm still alive.....just.

Insurance companies seem to vary in the discounts given for the alarm. Sun Alliance offered a 12% discount with the alarm. The NACOSS alarm company is my mates company (but he's still a staple-gun toting, skirting-board-clipping, sling-it-in alarm fitter in my book!). I may well not bother...

    I'm still alive.....just.

Hi all, My house purchase finally went through and I've removed most of what was left in there and starting from scratch. It's not habitable at the moment (hence why I've not been on here trying to tackle all the leeccy questions) and being an electrician doesn't really come in...

    Downlighter positioning

Watch out for the joists...it can be a long and painful process if you can't guestimate the positions of the joists. Practice by playing 'pin the tail on the donkey' :D

    voltage drop regulations

What you have to remember is that the electrician installing it doesn't necessarily always design it. We have a consultant who also works for the force concerned and we have to install to his design. Unless it's unsafe there's not a lot you can say. We've just partially rewired (too tight for a...

A wise decision  . It'll be fine , honest.

    shower installation

 I think you should consider paying someone to put it in for you. If you need to ask this question I seriously doubt your ability to safely and correctly install a supply for a shower. I know I sound harsh but if you're going to receive a fatal electric shock in the home it will probably...

Earth Connnections on Twin and Earth

 Echo il78's comment. If you don't carry out testing you will not know how irritating it is . Don't put them in the same earth sleeve and don't twist them together, if you double all of your ends over it will be just as strong and durable connection.

    External waterproof wall socket

For what it's worth I'd use MK every time. Top quality products and the plug top will not compromise the IP rating.

    Working with SWA cable

I'm not that much older than you boys! The more you learn, the more you will realise you need the older generations to learn from. You will soon learn that the old boys aren't up-to-date with their reg's, they often have a 'can't test-won't test' attitude, they moan a lot, they take...
