Carpet & underlay on top of laminate underlay boards?

Thanks for your reply CD! The plastic sheeting is over wooden floorboards so I'll get rid of that. Will take your advice on getting rid of the laminate underlay as well. Regarding carpet underlays are there any others you would recommend other than Axminster Axfelt65? As mentioned my...

Carpet & underlay on top of laminate underlay boards?

Hi All, My sitting room floor is very cold so I've decided to rip up the laminate and replace with carpet. After taking up the laminate I noticed the underlay boards are in good nick and was wondering if I should keep them there for extra insulation? The normal carpet underlay and carpet...

    painting newly skimmed walls

I've been advised by my builder to use Leyland Super Latex for the first 'mist' coat. Will this give the same effect as watered down Matt emulsion?

Scantronic alarm - how to disable?

Thanks Denford. I have a feeling I may have "knackered" the alarm when I ripped the battery out so I think it'll have to be replaced. I will have a look at the 9651, any ideas how much it costs? In the mean time do you know any way I can disable the current alarm so it doesn't go off when...

Scantronic alarm - how to disable?

Hi, When I bought my house 3 years ago it had a Scantronic 9452 alarm installed which I never used. There was a period when it would go off on it's own so I unscrewed the control box cover and took out the battery. It has since not given me any problems except when the power is cut which...

Under Floor Heating - costs per area

Hi, Is it true that the cost per area for UFH decreases significantly the larger the area is? I'm sure I read somewhere that for example adding UFH to the second floor of a house would not be that much more expensive than having just the ground floor done because the initial outlay costs are...

exposed angle bead - should I prime?

Just had walls skimmed and I've noticed I can see the metal from the angle bead along the edge of the window frame. Should I prime this exposed area before painting and if so with what? Thanks in advance!

    White ceiling and white coving?

Thanks for all the suggestions, much appreciated. I think I'll probably end up painting ceiling and coving both in white Matt emulsion first (easy as no cutting it between ceiling/coving) and see how it looks. If I'm not completely happy I can re-paint the coving. Using Satinwood is an...

    White ceiling and white coving?

I'm planning to paint both my ceiling and coving white with the walls in Natural Calico. Would painting both the ceiling and coving in Dulux Brilliant Matt White be the way to go or would it look better to have some contrast eg paint the coving in soft sheen white for example. The house is...

Preparation for skimming - removing blown plaster

Thanks RichardC My plasterer doesn't speak much English and he's the kinda guy you call, he'll turn up next day and do the job. I can't really give him a call to ask advice 'cos I wouldn't be able to explain the problem without sign language and him seeing it for himself but I don't want to...

Preparation for skimming - removing blown plaster

Thanks for your advice, it's much appreciated. I believe it's the base plaster that has blown leaving just bare brick behind. Removing the blown plaster will leave a difference of maybe 2cm between the good plaster and the wall so I will buy some easifil as suggested and fill it. Thanks!

Preparation for skimming - removing blown plaster

I stripped the wallpaper from my landing area in preparation for it to be skimmed and found that some of the plaster at the bottom of the wall had blown. I will chip this out but I wanted to ask what other preparation should I do before the plasterer arrives? ie - is it necessary to PVA the...

    Opinions on Moving Bathroom

Hi First post & know bugger all about drainage so be gentle with me. I'm in the same situation ie need to move a bathroom from the back to the front of a 1st floor duplex flat. The house is semi-detached so I'm guessing this makes it easier to run a soil pipe along the side of the house...
