Thanks Tony So would that be the valve at the base of the cylinder? And I expect I'll need to run all hot taps to clear the tank? If I do clear the tank of hot water, will any sludge then be released into the rads when i re-fill the cylinder?

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to offer guidance and help. The BG Engineer has been and also diagnosed that the motor had packed up. With a little negotiation, and through his own good will, he has replaced the whole head rather than just the motor, so I have new switches as well...
