How to find a builder? Large extension.

We have a decent size extension planned. Kitchen, dinner, utility room, toilet, 2 bedrooms, bathroom, ensuite etc. About 50m2 on ground.

I have never had any serious building work done before and I do not know any builders that have undertook this size of job. How should i go about finding one, rather than sticking a pin in YP?

The problem is that good builders often go bad when they are offered larger contracts. The worst job I've ever seen was done by a guy who for years had had a very good reputation - but a big contract was offered and he went so bad it was unbelievable.
