i folks i am hoping a qualified sparky out there can help me.

i have a ring main one of the sockets on the ring main is no longer needed due to its position.

i have been told that i can disconnect the socket and joint the ring in the outlet box using crimp connectors as long as this connection is still accessible under a blanking plate.

is this correct or do i have to rip out the whole ring main back to the consumer unit.

many thanks

jon

Crimps are permanent, they can be done in an accessory box or anywhere on the circuit.

If in a non servicable location such as a void (floor, ceiling, wall) then test before you close the void. Used insulated crimps (blue, red) and overlay with s/e tape.

It is always best if disconnecting a point in the installation to totally remove the cables that are no longer required, but often due to varying factors this is sometimes not possible.

If your going to blank the socket off rather than totally removing the point then I would suggest maybe an alternative to crimping is the use of these

They are easy to use and as long as you can gain access to them are safe and reliable.

If the joint is going to remain accessible in the manner you described, you can make the joint using any of the normal techniques - e.g with a bit of 'connector block' (or the Wago connectors which someone else has suggested).

Kind Regards, John.

As you going to end up with a blank cover plate instead of a socket plate, I can't see the point in removing the socket.

Have done exactly this in nursery rooms.

Last time was when I saw one of these fitted and explained how dangerious they were.

Some kids are a bit handy with screwdrivers though. Stick a blob of filler over the screws in the blanking plate.
