Hi, the consumer unit is full and is the old wired fuse type, and I want to add a few extra sockets to the downstairs ring main, I understand that an RCD can be fitted externally to the CU to protect the Ring main, but does the RCD have to feed an MCB then the ring main or can the RCD just look after the ring without an MCB. Thanking you folks in advance...

You really need to upgrade your existing CU, and possibly the same with your wiring, because if you still have fuse wire then it's likely that your wiring is past its sell-by date as well.
