Hello. My radiators have trv's...you know the ones with numbers 0 to 5...0 for shut and 5 for fully open. Except mine are all different e.g. shuts at 3 and max at 4.

So, is callibrating/configuring the trv's a DIY job? Can it be fixed?

Thank you,

Hajj

You were supposed to be able to calibrate some Honeywell valves but It's an absolute waste of time. Other makes I'm not sure of. If you can get new heads then do so, but if not change the valves, especially if they're old.

1. Do you mean you can only move them between 3 and 4 and are they Drayton TRV4s by any chance?

If so the previous owner may have locked them so they can only be set between 3 and 4.

2. Or do you mean the rad is cold when set to 3 and hot when set to 4?

If so the system may not be correctly balanced.

No, they are Optima A7's

yes, the radiator is cold on three and hot on four... so not much variation!

the system is not balanced, but I thought the idea was to get the TRVs calibrated so it can be balanced e.g. bedroom on three, livingroom on four, bathroom on two, etc

No, you balance the system first. Then the TRV will maintain the required room temperature, which you set by adjusting the TRV to the appropriate number. Unfortunately this part is a bit hit and miss, as 4 on one TRV will mean 20C but on another make it may mean 22C. In any case the location of the TRV in the room will have an influence.
