Any ideas of the best way to cut a slate shelf down its length?
Is it a specialist job?
Having never cut anything like this before, I don't know if I can cut part way through on one side and then split it.
Or cut part way through both sides.
Or use a tile saw (Electric/circular) to cut part way through both sides.
It's for a friend, and I'll only get one chance at this!
I'd like it to be in two equal halves, and not several jagged pieces. ;)

I cant remember the answer.
But.
When I was looking to lay a slate fire hearth, I found a slate supplier & asked them how to cut it. (Make out you intendin buying it).
I think I might have either 'googled' or 'yell.com'
Hope that gives you a starting point.

Hi,
I used to fit fireplaces and have to cut down 1" slate hearths when our bloke in the office measured it up wrong. I would masking tape along the line to cut and then go at it with a 4" grinder. It is a hell of a dusty job but it would work.
You could I suppose go to a slate dealer and ask them to cut it on a machine. I dont suppose they would do it for free though.

DanRo. They said angle grinder, but cant remember what disc they said. They said it would be dusty, but I assume you could do it outside & do it wet.

Thanks for all the advice.
Sounds like the best bet is to ask a slate dealer to cut it.
It'll be cheaper than buying a new one if I made a total mess of the cut.
Nothing's ever easy, is it? ;)

Get it cut professionally on a diamond bridge saw, the cut will be mm perfect.

Also, slate dust is a carcinogen, using a dry cutting grinder blade is not sound advice.
