my plan is to either.

cut a rectanglular piece of plasterboard with its length about 30mm longer than the hole diameter and its shorter side the same as the hole diameter. pull some string through a small whole in the centre of the rectangular pboard with a knot and insert in in the hole and twist 90 degrees in the 2 planes and pull down whilst inserting some building adhesive, let it dry and fill.

or cut a piece of circular plasterboard about 1 or 2mm smaller than the old downlighter hole and then apply building adhesive to the outer edge of the whole and push the circular p board up into the whole and leave 1 or 2 mm to fill after drying.

any other advice please.

regards

The 'easy' way in my opinion is to cut some circular pieces of plasterboard the same size as the holes. Get a strip of batten 100 mm longer than the diameter of the hole. Shove it up the hole, and lay it accross the centre of the hole. Fit a wood screw through the ceiling an inch away from the hole into the end of the batten. Repeat at the other end of the batten. Screw the circular piece of plasterboard onto the batten to fill the hole.

Fill as necessary.
