Once the shrinkage has stopped the crack will stay filled.

Seeing as how the house is up at least 50 years I think its done all the shrinking it's gonna do by now

An alternative option is to open up the crack a little, so it is 2-3mm wide. Run a grout removal tool up and down. Then "inject" the crack with an none solvent flexible gap filling building adhesive (No more Nails interior is my preferred choice) and smooth any excess off. Leave to dry and paint.

I've already chipped the plaster back to the bare brick so no going back now. What did surprise me when I got back to the blocks is that neither of the 2 walls that make the corner seem to be tied into each other in any way

With the blockwork bare there was a gap in the corner between the 2 walls that I could fit a pencil into at its widest point. Since then I have filled the gap with expanding foam and have shaped the galavanized wire lath to form a right angle and I'm gonna secure it to the wall this weekend.

One question thought; The wire lath seems pliable in that you can stretch it wider to a degree. In light of this I was going to secure 2 full lengths of it to the wall with the washered steel nails. I'm just thinking that the 2 lengths will provide more rigidity. Am I right in thinking this or would one length be enough?

Wire lath will stretch if you pull across it. If you feel it's gonna be stronger with 2 layers, and you have the depth to coat over it, then it's not a problem. It'll make a strong job even stronger. Try not to stretch the mesh. Also, pay particular attention to cut edges of the original plaster.Run a good wet brush down the 2 edges a couple of times, and brush in some PVA as well. Plaster onto it while it's wet and it'll give a good bond to the plaster.

They'll work perfect,, you've got it all weighed up. Let's know how you get on. ;)

Just to let you know that I got the crack sorted last month using the wire lath plus skimming and re-plastering and re-painting. Now you would never know that there had ever been anything wrong at all. It was definitely a long winded method but well worth it.

The bedroom was being done up as a nursery and it's a good job we got it done when we did because the new arrival landed 4 and a half weeks earlier than expected but it didn't seem to bother her one little bit!!
