We're in a 3 story victorian terrace and we want to move my lad to an attic room but need to make some more storage for all his stuff like his board games etc.

The room has a dormer window and running parallel is the eaves. I would like to board out a couple of meters worth and box it in and create some access from his room - I'm thinking a small 500mm-600mm opening with MDF door and architrave just in from of where the TV is.

Tied to the purlin are struts tied to each joist at about 400mm centers. There is a pic below. An opening like this would be OK for him at this age but not when he gets bigger. So wondering is it OK to remove one strut, building a frame so it is attached to the purlin and the two ajoining struts?

Hi, anyone know whether this should be OK or is it best in builders thread rather than roofing?

looking at the colour of the struts, they look new. What are their dimensions, and how are they fixed?

did the conversion meet building regulations?

I think the house has always had attic rooms. We renovated the house and stripped alot back but those struts were already there - I'm guessing it was the old landlord that put them in.

At the minute they're just nailed to the purlin and to the joists. They are 3x2 and it also looks like there is a long piece of 3x2 attached to the top of the joists running at a right angle directly under where the purlin is. The struts are also fixed to this long piece of 3x2.

So what ever storage I create will have to sit on top of this 3x2 too.

When we bought it the survey mentioned about triangulation so we did have some timber attached to where the rafters meet the joists but that is the only structural work we did in the attic.

*edited - to add dimensions
