Bought a new house about a year ago but don't use the alarm the key pad has been showing a phone number for the past year. Tonight it had a long tone but the display is now showing ***************** and flashing, put the code in and the tone stopped. Any ideas on the display and do I have a problem?

The flashing stars mean that the keypad has lost the connection with the central control box (the steel one with Galaxy on the lid) - though oddly the power is still on. Have you had a power cut or carried out any DIY that might have damaged the cable? Try pressing the Esc a few times and see if that brings the display back.

I'd suggest that you either get a local alarm company to come and check it over if you want to use it. Or completely decommission it otherwise. Is it an old ADT system by any chance?

The escape didn't work, and still flashing.

No power cuts or diy. I take it I can't disconnect it myself?

Disconnect mains to the control unit. Does the keypad stay lit for long ? If not, then it's time for a 12v 7ah battery replacement. About £15 on ebay for a decent brand.

Try this and we'll take it from there with the next steps.

So I have switched it off and the panel goes off almost instantly.
What battery do I need and one I have it is it easy enough to replace?

Thanks all for the advice, new battery installed and looks like it's done the trick.
