Bath Room Air Brick

I want to fit a plastic hit and miss vent in the bathroom, the hole behind the original plaster vent is bigger than the hit and miss which means there is nowhere to put the screws. It is the top and bottom of the opening that is to big. What is the best option to reduce the opening.

3 pieces of timber - 1 top 1 bottom and 1 between - like an H . Gripfill top + bottom ones, leave to go off. remove middle one and use filler to smooth between plaster
