golf dpf regenration

hi guys - i just bought my kids vw golf 1.6tdi tdi 2010 plate.. since she had the car , the dpf im assuming has been done as and when needed cos she drove mainly on the motorway most of the time. I oersonally dont drive thatmuch, just work and back , around town, a bit of shopping etc. Very rarely i go on the motorway. ive read short journeys and constant stop starts will troigger the dpf warning light. I do about 5500 to 6000 miles per year. How often should i take the car on the motorway for a good run to trigger the dpf regenration process and what speed and how long shpuld i drive the car for ? i dont mind wastin a bit of fuel if its gonna save me thousands of pounds in the long run if the dpf filter gets clogged up and car is unusable..thanks

Short runs are the killer of DPF's - aim to give the car a decent run every week if you can......20 miles is usually about right.
The trouble is, you don't know when its starting to obstruct, or indeed when its clearing itself so it is a bit of a lottery!
The same applies to petrol engines too which do short runs....basically the catalytic converter isn't getting hot enough.

once a week, i was thinking once a month...damm these dpf filters, did take it on the morwat today, constant 70 mph at 2000 revs and above for about 30 minutes...was hopinfg to this once a month..i only do about 100 miles per week lol

Alas, its the great unknown.....my own diesels never do a run of less than 12 miles, one of them doesn't move for a week at a time and then may do a good run (50 miles).
I've never had DPF issues but I only use the best quality diesel (BP Ultimate etc) and the stop/start system is always turned off. This also helps the EGR systems, I think.
Mind you, these diesels are all Euro 6 so who knows what the accurate answer is.

thanks mate... i use good quality diesel too esso etc..think ill take it for a little run evry couple of weeks, motorway is just round the corner from me..a copuple of junctions should do it.

I've had great results from JLM dpf cleaner. Add it to a tank of diesel then take the wagon on the motorway for a good run at 1500-1800 rpm. Usually the 120 miles to visit one of my daughters.
Not a cheap additive (about £25 a can) but spot on).

Just do high revs around town , keeps the pedestrians on their toes .

Just drive it as normal. We’ve had a few dpf diesels and only only used them for short local journeys. Never had a dpf warning come up. If one does, then take it for a run on the motorway.
