In my living room I currently have 2 radiators one opposite another. Also I have my room thermostat in the same room. However both radiators appear to have Wheelhead Valves on the right and drain off valves on the left. I understamd why they dont have TRVs.

My question is how open or closed should each valve be? Currently the room isnt very warm.

Thanks.

Where is the room thermostat is location to the radiators? Is it near any heat sources such as a radiator, direct sunlight etc? Are the radiators warm/hot? Do they require bleeding?

Hi The Novice,

I have sent you a pictures of the room layout aa you can see there are no other heat sources nor is the room stat near any direct sunlight.

The radiators do get warm but keep firing on the boiler which in turn courses Short cyling. The rads where alot hotter a year or so ago.

I have also bled the rads with no sign of air. Hope this helps.

Thanks

I’d say your thermostat isn’t in the room with the rads. Looks to be in the hall to me. I’m no heating engineer and I’ll probably be corrected but I’d say open up fully the valve on each rad that gets hot first, then control the flow through the rad with the other valve. You may have to experiment a bit with them.

Your right Mottie but as you can see we dont have a door between the front room and the hall way.

Thanks for your help by the way.

Also the pipe which is hottest is definately the right hand side of each rad which has the wheelhead on. Am I right in thinking this is the flow and the drain off being on the left being the return?

Just dont know which side I need to strangle down if any!

Thanks Kamy, as per @Mottie you have a room thermostat in the hallway, so although not in the same room and no door, it should work as intended. The rads don’t control, the boiler in this setup, but rather the room thermostat.

Does the room stat require batteries? If yes do they need changing? Also did you check the boiler thermostat?

Boiler stat not been looked and wall thermostat is hard wired requiring no batteries.

Its just the two valves on either end have confused me as I dont understand which is the flow and return and how open or closed each should be. The only assessment I can make is that if each Rad isnt providing a certain amount of heat this is turn is telling the room stat to fire up the boiler. I think the problem does relate to the balancing of those two rads.

Do the radiators heat up well? Are they are hot as the others in the house and do they stay as hot as the others for the same amount of time when the CH is running?
