The plastic screw with the locknut is adjusted to press correctly on the pin. Undo the locknut and screw the plastic bolt towards the valve to close the valve at a lower water level.

Aha so sorry....just follow footprints advice above and all will be well.
10mm spanner and maybe a pair of snipe nose pliers may help.
