I was back up in the loft today and it seemed a bit better. I had not made any changes.
One idea which might give me two clues. We have a downlight in the bathroom and a fan that's vented using flexi-duct to a cowl vent on the gable. That's the only two 'holes' in the roof apart from the loft hatch. I think the duct is fine and still connected as we can hear the flap banging in the wind (annoying though!). I'm not the smallest of people so simply 'going to check' is a bit of a mission.
Would setting off a smoke pellet in the bathroom be a good idea to see if:
a) the fan is doing its job and taking the air right out the house - if I see smoke it would tell me there is a leak somewhere and presumably not to use the fan until it's fixed
b) is moisture coming up through the light hole - if yes, would a simple light cover work?.
That might answer the question for the bathroom.
Once that has settled, would setting one-off in the loft allow me to see the airflow in the loft?
Might be ridiculous and as we come out the cold snap it appears to be getting better - until next year I presume!
