We've bought a wooden house sign for our front garden. I've pinched a couple of holes and knocked the legs in. In the spring, I'll need to pull it up weekly to mow the lawn, which I think will enlarge the holes and make the sign wobbly. Are there any ideas for a permanent system? I thought maybe two pieces of square section pipe knocked into the ground, for the sign to fit into?

Why not just use lawn shears around it?

Square section pipe as sockets bashed into the lawn would be fine - just get as thick a wall as you can, and knock them well down so they don't get clipped by the mower blade!
Of course you could just strim round, if that's a bore.

If you use square section pipe, as stated, make sure it is below mower blade level, preferably flush with the soil level.
Before you hammer them into the ground drill a number of holes in the sides and pour a few inches of pea shingle down them. The holes and shingle will help to drain and water out of the pipes and stop the wood rotting so quickly. Depending how long you want it to last you may consider soaking the legs in preservative for a few days and then fitting some heat shrink sleeving on the posts. Trim it off neatly at the exit from the pipes to give a neat finish.
