Hi,

I want some tall shrubs in a smallish gap between me and my neighbour for privacy and sound insulation.

Ive settled on either thuja brabant or cherry laurel as both are cheap and form dense screening.

However for various reasons i was hoping to keep them in pots, partly because it leads to one of our side alleys that we occasionally need access too.

Is there anyway you can grow any shrub in a 50 LITRE pot long term, or do shrubs always need repotting eventually? Id be keeping them trimmed to 5/6 foot high.

What about if i made loads of holes in the base of the pot? Would the roots eventually root down through them holes into the ground as that is an option i could consider for most of them.

Once the roots get into the soil the plant wall become mainly dependant on the water from there.
If you then move the pot the plant will then wilt which isnt so much an issue for smaller plant but a shrub the size you want may be a problem

Is there nothing that will survive indefinetely in a 50L pot? 6 ft tall and bushy is the only requirement for privacy.

In a heatwave you would need to water it at least twice daily. effectively you have a large bonsai to maintain.
