For various reasons i want to elevate my 6 ft shrubs off the ground in pots.

I want to leave the shrubs in pots long term and i dont want to have to repot them ever.

Im happy for them to eventually root into the ground but like them to remain in the pots without becoming root bound.

If i drill loads of drainage holes in the bottom and lay them on top of compost will they eventually root down? Or could they potentially root bound themselves and die?

The pots are 50L and im planning on putting 6 ft laurels or thujas in them instantly. Probably keep either shrub trimmed to 7 ft maximum.

They would struggle sideways but once they learn they can get out the bottom they will escape. If you want to restrict the height and width you’ll need to restrict root growth I should think.
