All they had was a room at the far end of the bays, with a window looking out to the start of the bays.

I use an MOT only garage.
They don't do repairs, so they only point out real faults.
I had a bad experience with a rogue garage where they wanted to replace clutch and gearbox and find a fault with emissions.
Needless to say all of this was a lie.
 
I have used the same MOT place for my own cars, for the past 25 years - They are well aware I only do my own work, so they get nowt out of anything they flag up. I have had so many minor items flagged as being dangerous faults needing urgent repair, even one garage trying to cause a fault with me watching them them cause a spurious fault - that near the Sky ferry in the early days of MOT's.
 
I have an MOT, with no practical means of undertaking any real maintenance other than the statutory checks etc, like many I'm pretty much in the lap of the gods! :LOL:

The garage I use seems OK, on average I've had more 1st time passes than fails, when I had my rear brakes done recently (somewhere else) he reckoned both rear shocks were leaking but we'll see ...

Well, having had a MOT testers licence for 40+ years, I’ve never had a fail and the concept of actually paying for one on a car I own is new to me! Since my mate sold his testing station for development, I paid for the MOT's on both our cars for the first time last year. I had a game of golf with him few weeks ago and he was moaning about having to pay for a test on his own car. He got over £1m for the station, the tight git. Anyway, freebies this year on the cars but I’ve just realised the bike is due soon. More expense!
 
Had a mate many years ago who used to be a manager at a Kwik Fit station in Liverpool. He warned me never to go there for ANYTHING!
All employees went on a 'Specialised High Intensive Training' course. Yes, it was commonly called a SH IT course and it was to learn how to bull*hit customers.
A favourite one was when a woman or youngster brought their car in for a free brake check or tyre check. Customer would be invited to sit in the waiting area and given a free tea/coffee. They would put the car up on the ramps, check the item requested and then squirt a bit of oil around the area. The customer would then be called out to have a look at a 'fluid' leak and told various things such as brake fluid leaking, suspension arm leaking etc and they couldn't let them take the car back till it was repaired as it would be illegal.
He told me this story after a stainless steel exhaust I had had fitted by KF in Weymouth was playing up less than 12 months later. He took a look under the car and said only the back box was stainless, the front and mid section were standard. Thanks to him I got a full system fitted, (standard of course), and a full refund of my previous 'repair'.

Briefly I had a job where I maintained and inspected some of their equipment, which would give me ample opportunity to hear some of the bull*hit said to their customers and the discussion between staff about the customers. I would never go to KF for anything.

there was a time when bunging money to the Conservative party increased your chances of a gong quite visibly.
 
You just need to look for stories online to find lots of people being scammed.
Mot failed on brand new brakes, false leaks, new wiper blades, headlights, emissions without testing them.
All sorts of BS.
I wonder, if these scammers invested their times in being honest, wouldn't they gain lots of loyal customers and make the same money?

Perhaps a glass polish would help if the problem arises again ?

I remember fitting some Champion wipers that I bought a decade or more ago from, would you believe, Sainsbury's, for a paltry few quid. They seemed to work very efficiently for several years until they were frozen to buggеry one winter. I replaced these with some Bosch equivalents which were from the get-go utter crɑp, consistently juddering even for a single wipe. Having changed these for something better I heard that it is well worth occasionally putting rubber lubricant on the blades to prevent them from becoming brittle. So I got a can of this - the one on the left - and it really does a good job of keeping the rubber blades soft and pliable. You need to attach the tube and press the button as gently as possible so as to keep the spray to a minimum. Use a finger to help spread the silicone along the full length of the blades on both sides. Leave it to dry then give the wipers a test. You might think that it would smear the windscreen, but it really does not. In fact the 'Quick Drying' new stuff is probably even better and presumably is effective instantly.

Thoroughly agree with this. It sometimes seems as if a garage that can carry out MOTs simply has a licence to sell product as and when it chooses. That said, there do not seem to be a lot of 'MOT only' shops. Usually the local council have an authorised MOT depot but a booking is often required a couple of weeks in advance.
 
If they judder, you can bend the blade a bit so the "at rest" position is more central so it flips over more easily at change of direction.
